Blurred Vision @ Beatles 50...

In April 2013, Blurred Vision were among the many bands to play at the new music festival in Sarnia called 'Indiefest'.  While they were in Sarnia, they also played at Cheeky Monkey as part of our  Record Store Day Celebration.  Last week, as we were enjoying our morning coffee & tea before coming into work, we saw them perform live on the CTV Canada AM Soundstage!  Blurred Vision has the distinct honour of being the ONLY Canadian musicians to be part of the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Beatles U.S. invasion!  We are so very happy for them.  Read on to learn more about this event, their connection and watch the video of their song "Dear John". Daylight For Deadeyes at Superbowl

Daylight For Deadeyes at...

Exciting news from one of our favourite bands... Daylight For Deadeyes. As reported in the Toronto Star Tuesday January 28, 2014... When the Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks hit the field for the Super Bowl Sunday, football won’t be the first thing on Chris Gormley’s mind. Instead, Gormley will be thinking about the music filling the stadium, including a song by his band Daylight for Deadeyes. The Mississauga band’s song “New York” has become a popular number for Big Apple sports teams over the last two years, playing at Yankees and Jets games. The song is even featured on several of the New York Rangers’ “Sounds of the game” playlists. But having the song blare at the biggest NFL game of the year Sunday raises the stakes even higher. “You can’t pay for that kind of exposure or publicity,” Gormley said. Daylight for Deadeyes wrote “New York” after Gormley and his brother Matt, the band’s lead guitarist, visited ...

Gourmet Passions in Downtown...

Happy to announce another new business has opened in our Downtown Cultural District.  Gourmet Passions.  Located at 172 Front St. (just north of Scotia Bank parking lot), they offer a large selection of  pure, fresh, extra virgin fused & infused olive & specialty oils, balsamic vinegars,  loose leaf teas, fresh spices from around the world, gourmet sauces & chutneys, dry rubs, award winning mustards, jams & preserves, hot sauces & pastes.  Gift Baskets are of course also available. Roland stopped in today while out on errands reported back that they had some unique twists such as the vinegar and oils are in crocks and vats with a tap to fill a bottle from.  The old walk-in safe is the area for the hot sauces - seems fitting doesn't it? I look forward to checking out their selection of loose leaf teas.  Ironically, just recently I mentioned to Roland that I wished someplace ...

Look who moved into our block&...

Right behind us, we have a new neighbour we are quite excited about.  Z and S Design and Tailoring Group has relocated from Mitton Street location to 163 Cromwell.  Not only are they a full service tailoring shop, but according to  Jill (pictured below) and Nicole, they will be selling their personally designed and made clothing including handbags. We feel this new shop where you can find quality clothing and accessories no one else will have, is a wonderful addition to Sarnia's Downtown Cultural District.  Stop in to welcome them to the area and take a look at what they have to offer.  They are open Monday to Friday 9:00 am - 5:00 pm and on Saturday 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.

YOUR PLACE Open for Business

YOUR PLACE Open for Business

We have a new neighbour on our block located 3 doors to the south of Cheeky Monkey,  YOUR PLACE EATERY AND BAR. Last night (August 29,2021) was their first night being open, so we thought we'd try it out.   First off, have to say it is not a large establishment.  It's what I would call intimate with very tasteful decor in an unpretentious way with warm looking oak paneling on the walls.  The seating is the  urban chic high chair & table style.  I know it is popular, but when you are only 5 foot 2 inches, it can be a bit daunting to get up on them.  That is my one and ONLY complaint about Your Place. The menu itself is is a fair size with interesting, exciting choices.  It is a very well thought out menu with something for everyone and many items that we have not seen in ...

Boko The Great’s Visit

Posted in: Friends & Neighbours, Local Talent, News | No Comments

Laughing and being mystified is how our day started at Cheeky Monkey on this beautiful Tuesday, July 30 morning.  The reason was we had an unexpected visit from BOKO THE GREAT, the fabulous local magician who is a twin cousin to Jayden The Jester. Along with Boko the Great was local videographer Ian Alexander of Rocketship Productions.  The two of them are going to various Sarnia businesses where Boko does a few of his "tricks" while Ian films.  From what I understand, they have made 33 short videos so far of with the hope of putting it all together into on movie at some point. Boko The Great did a disappearing trick with Roland's wedding band.  This of course made us a tad worried we would never see it again - but our fears were unfounded!  He also did a rope trick moving a knot that caused me to have a "how'd ...

Congrats to Erika & Sara!...

THURSDAY JULY 25 - For those of you who have heard and seen Erika (Sit) and Sara (Campbell) play in our store or other local venues over the last couple of years, you will understand how proud we are of them. The first time they played in Cheeky Monkey, they were very inexperienced and nervous.  With each return performance, we noticed they were getting not only more confident, but their playlist was growing.  Along with some really interesting covers of songs, they have been writing and performing self penned songs. Of late, they have been getting more and more gigs outside of Sarnia-Lambton.  On July 20th, they competed in a Battle of the Bands in West Lorne with the prize being the opportunity to be the opening act at Boot Hill  'Country' Jamboree in Bothwell.  Guess who won?!  You guessed it - ERIKA AND SARA!  They will be opening for Aaron Pritchett ...

Who Is Kyp Harness?

Who Is Kyp Harness?

MONDAY, JULY 15 - by Mary Anne - Do you remember Kyp Harness?  If you do - let us know.  We know Kyp Harness - not well, but we like his music - a lot. How do we know Kyp?  Well he was originally from Sarnia, but moved to Toronto in the 80's before we lived here, but we had heard his name mentioned occasionally as being a really good songwriter as well as a published author of several books.  We had his CD's for sale, so we decided to buy Welcome to the Revolution for ourselves.  We were not disappointed.  His socially conscience lyrics are mixed with a good dose of wry humour such as in the song 'Chemical Valley' that was inspired by his hometown. Recently we were contacted by another former Sarnia resident, Dustin Kuypers, who also ended up in Toronto to be part of an interesting team with bright business ...

Save the Cull Drain Bridge!

Save the Cull Drain Bridge!

WEDNESDAY JULY 10 UPDATE...   From Steve Loxton... Hi everyone, I have an update to share with you... I had applied to speak to city council (as a private citizen) about the bridge at the upcoming July 15th regular council session. Also, Nathan Holth, had also agreed to return to Sarnia and had also applied to speak. This morning we both got calls from the city clerk's office, letting us know that the city engineering dept. had not yet completed its report for submission to council and that they are planning a second public information and input meeting before finalizing their position on the bridge. Because of this, we were informed that an appearance by us before council would be premature at this time... There was no way for us to know this ahead of time, because the council meeting agenda is not released to the public until this Friday. The focus now falls on ...

Your opinion counts –...

THURSDAY JUNE 27 UPDATE... Community branding survey drawing great response from Lambton residents Sarnia-Lambton, Ontario, Canada – June 27, 2022 – The response to an on-line community branding survey to gather residents’ opinions on Sarnia-Lambton is garnering an excellent response. Since the survey launch on June 16, over 930 people have gone online to help bring our image into focus by providing their honest opinions on Lambton County. “Our consultants have been amazed at the response the survey is receiving,” notes Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership general manager George Mallay. “Communities much larger than ours have not had the response that Sarnia-Lambton residents are providing to our local survey. Our community branding partners are doing an outstanding job in working together to get the message about the survey out to our residents.” “We’re thrilled at the response,” says Mallay. “Lambton residents are proving once again how deeply we care about our community. A huge thank ...
