Theatre Sarnia Snippet Night...

Review of Theatre Sarnia Season Preview Snippet Night 2012-2013 Submitted by: Barb Toye Local theatre goers experienced a special evening on April 3, 2012: Theatre Sarnia presented the 2012-2013 Season Preview Snippet Night, free of charge. The mimimalist sets effectively evoked the atmosphere of each play and the note-perfect cast members were off-book after very little rehearsal time. Previewed during the evening were three classics: Arsenic and Old Lace, The Secret Garden, Guys and Dolls and two more modern pieces: Squabbles and Calendar Girls. Each Snippet left the guests wanting more of the promising upcoming season. As a bonus, the audience members were given a preview of the next production, I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change!, which runs April 13-21, 2012. A reception followed in the Lawton Gallery, where performers and crew mingled with the appreciative audience. The talent of the actors, directors, backstage crew and all who contribute to mounting the productions is first-rate ...

March First Friday with Soul...

It was a blustery, rain night for the March 2nd First Friday in Sarnia's Downtown Cultural District.  Despite the inclement weather, the fans of First Friday were out 'n' about and making Cheeky Monkey a priority spot to stop at.  The reason for that was the local band Soul Patch and the photographic artwork of Pierre Houle. This was not the first time Soul Patch has performed at Cheeky Monkey and we're pretty sure it will not be the last - at least we hope not.  There was one difference in the band from previous performances.  A new member in accomplished multi-instrumentalist Craig Seaward joined lead singer/guitarist/keyboard player Dwayne Cloes, electric and upright bass player Dave Doyle and drummer Lyle Graham.  Craig's electric guitar added an extra dimension and energy to what are already excellent original songs. It was certainly an appreciative audience that braved the elements to be here.  There tenacity was rewarded by ...

Erika & Sara Singing on a...

For three hours on the afternoon of Saturday, February 25, young singer-songwriters Erika and Sara performed on the Red Carpet Stage at Cheeky Monkey. Before the audience got too big, they spent a few minutes with Cheeky Charlie letting him sing along on a song with them. Their song selections range greatly with something to please every age group.  From Johnny Cash's 'Folsom Prison' to several covers from Adele's most recent album and the hit from Foster The People.  Erika's sweet emotion filled voice accompanied by Sara's skill on the acoustic guitar were especially pleasing on their version of The Beatles 'Let It Be'. At the start of their second set, Erika took a little longer break from singing while Sara played several songs solo on her guitar really showcasing her skills. Along with the many covers versions they made there own, were mixed a selection of some of their original songs. These ladies, are ...

Having Hope at Home –...

Cheeky Charlie, Roland and I were all set to go to the Imperial Theatre to see the current play HAVING HOPE AT HOME presented by Theatre Sarnia.  Unfortunately, I was not feeling well, so we decided not to go.  BUT thanks to  good friend, Barb Toye who did go, we have a review for you.  From the sounds of it, we missed an excellent play and performance.   The play runs until Feb. 25th. Having Hope at Home - Reviewed by Barb Toye The excellent interior set was evocative of a semi-shabby rural farmhouse under refurbishment, with a cozy bedroom to the left, kitchen at the back, dining table mid-stage right and loveseat in foreground. A jazzy classical guitar piece was played during the opening speeches which unfortunately overrode some of the dialogue a bit. Periodically through the play snippets of McGarrigle Sisters songs were heard, in reference to the leading man's ...

Eddie Sayers Returns to Cheeky...

The cold wind was blowing snow flakes all through downtown Sarnia but those warm inside Cheeky Monkey didn't care.  They were here to listen to Eddie Sayers.  Some browsed the racks of CD's, DVD's and LP's both new and used as he played a combination of his own songs or did cover versions of his favourite bands like Bright Eyes.  Others were here especially to sit, relax and enjoy his unique style of singing.  The small but appreciative audience were joined by one of Eddie's biggest, we maybe it littlest fans, Cheeky Charlie.  He was lucky enough to get a front row seat sitting up on a fellow fans shoulders.   Gave him the best view in the house. Cheeky Charlie hopes Eddie will have a chance to come play at Cheeky Monkey again sometime in the future - either as a solo act or with his band.

Charlie Watts wants Rolling Stones to hit the road again... ...Further proof that drumming is great exercise...71-year-old Charlie Watts is ready and willing for another Rolling Stones tour. Watts told BBC 6 that it's more about the logistics that the will as far as the members of the group go. "Ronnie plays, I still play, Mick sings, he can do it anyway, I think Keith is doing some records. Anyway it would be great if we did, we are just getting to an age where it's getting a bit difficult to get it together and it's such a bloody performance getting us together." He also addressed why the band has been together for half of a century. "I think no one wants to quit because the other one will say you quit." A tour would be their first in five years, since 2007's Bigger Bang trek which set the North American Record with receipts ...
