Trivia Q & A # 28 –...

Q.  One of Canada's premiere soul acts had worked it's way into the charts with hits like  'Cry' (a remake) and 'Hurts To Love You'. Name these boys? A. The Philosopher Kings are a Canadian band who were most commercially successful in the late 1990s. The name of the band is derived from Plato's Republic, in which he outlines the design of an idealistic government, ruled by philosopher-kings. Gerald Eaton, along with Jason and Jon Levine formed The Philosopher Kings in the early 1990's to break the sterile atmosphere of the music school they attended. Their first album came out in 1994 and contained the hit 'Charms', which quickly reached the Top Ten in Canada and the Top 40 in the US. 1997 was their real breakout year however, when they released three hit singles, 'Hurts To Love You', 'Cry' (a remake of the Godley and Creme song) and 'You Don't Love Me'. Once you have heard the ...

Trivia Q & A # 27 –...

Q. Formed in Toronto in 1976, this band began with only two members taking care of all of the musical instruments. Which unique band, featuring Cameron Hawkins and Nash the Slash, and renowned for hits such as "Phasors On Stun" and "Just Like You", am I referring to? A.  FM - Cameron Hawkins, appearing as a typical rock star at the front of the stage, playing synthesizer, occasional bass guitar, and lead vocals; and Nash the Slash, a mysterious figure in dark clothes lurking in the shadows at the back of the stage, playing electric violin, electric mandolin, backing vocals, and operating a drum machine. Aside from Cameron's bass, the group did not use guitars. The duo first met each other while they were jamming with a band called Clear. Some time after February 1977[the group became a trio when they added Martin Deller on drums. After appearing on the CBC TV variety show Who's New, FM ...

July First Friday with...

Mike Blackmore has played at Cheeky Monkey many times over the years.  As has Dwayne Cloes.  Both have been here as part of bands and played here solo.  During the 2017 Record Store Day, they played here for the first time as a duo.  We were so impressed, we asked them to come back - so they did - for the July First Friday. With Mike on guitar, d'jembe (hand drum) and looping machine, and Dwayne playing bass guitar they created a unique musical experience.  You could not find two more different people in their history and approach to music, but somehow the combination of their wealth of talent works wonderfully for them. Armed with a playlist of originals and cover songs such as 'Knocking On Heaven's Door' and my personal favourite Mike has done for years, but never the same way twice, 'House of the Rising Sun', they easily entertained the audience ...
