Fernanda Cunha is a brazilian singer. She comes from a musical family. Her mother was a singer and her aunt, Sueli Costa, is a well-known composer in Brazil. She began performing in 1997 at various clubs around Rio de Janeiro.
Fernanda made her first Canadian appearance at the Yardbird Suite in 2005 and has been a regular performer in Canada from coast-to-coast-to-coast ever since: Vancouver Island and the Vancouver International Jazz Festival, the Alianait Arts Festival in Nunavut and Jazz Yukon series; Edmonton International Jazz Festival , University of Toronto and other venues. She also has presented clinics/workshops at Mohawk College in Hamilton(Ontario) with Pat Collins trio and at Camthra Secondary School in Mississauga(Ontario), and a 1 week residency performing concerts at long-term care facilities as well as in local schools(kindergarten through secondary) in Qualicum Beach(BC) as part of the Harvest of Music Festival.
In 2009, she explored the musical affinities between Canada and Brazil with her fourth album, appropriately entitled “Brasil Canada” featuring songwriters and musicians from both countries. It’s no secret that, although Brazil is Fernanda’s homeland and she performs at jazz festivals all over the world such as Wien in Austria, Aarhus in Denmark, Borneo Jazz in Malaysia, Canada is her heart´s country.
Her 2017 recording “Jobim 90” was dedicated to the most important Brazilian songwriter, Antonio Carlos Jobim.
This year, she is releasing her 8th CD solo, “Fernanda Cunha Canta Filó Machado”. Filó is a unique Brazilian songwriter with a colourful repertoire. The recording features her band including Ze Carlos on guitar, Camilla Dias on piano, Berval Moraes on bass, Helbe Machado on drums and Canada’s Reg Schwager on guitar. Fernanda has been touring with this repertoire, she performed this summer 2019 in Canada (Edmonton, Saskatoon and Toronto), UK, Austria, and Brazil
