MoreLast night for the January 4th First Friday, we had the pleasure of hearing WHITE FIRE REED live for the first time. For a 3 piece band, they sure pack a big musical punch. Performing mostly original material from their CD 'POSITIVE CHANGE', the audience very much appreciated their skill, enthusiasm & professionalism. A few covers were also done from bands such as The Doors, CCR & a version of a U2 song that was particularly amazing. Lead singer & bass player Gary was having lots of fun trying out a new toy he got for Christmas. I am not a techie kind of person, but I think it was a processor that he used to add reverb & other effects at the perfect times. The Sarnia-born astronaut is heading to the International Space Station from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan Dec. 19, one of three astronauts in the Expedition 34/35 crew. The first Canadian to walk in space and the only Canadian aboard the Russian Space Station Mir, Hadfield will be the first Canadian commander at the International Space Station for part of his five-month stay in zero-gravity. He will oversee more than 100 experiments — from gauging balance and blood pressure regulation in space, to studying dark matter. “It's surreal,” said Hadfield, 53, during a conference call from quarantine in Kazakhstan Tuesday. MoreIt has been a fun, hectic week making us feel like social butterflies starting with going to a special evening at The Imperial Theatre Wednesday night to thank their many wonderful volunteers. We do not qualify as true volunteers you see there on a show night, but it was very gratifying to know the theatre appreciates our efforts to publicize their many varied events through our website and in-store. We are more then happy to help out, but admit that getting to spend some time with fellow Imperial Theatre supporters and share the joy of a performance of show tunes and a glass of wine was very nice. This same day, before going to the Imperial, we hosted Yukon Blonde doing an acoustic in-store set and staying to chat with us and other fans while signing autographs. MoreA huge 'thank you' to Dine Alone Records for contacting us and arranging for the fabulous B.C. band YUKON BLONDE doing an acoustic in-store appearance at Cheeky Monkey on Wednesday, December 5th. They were in town as the opening act for The Sheepdogs at The Industry later the same night. This was not the first time they have played in Sarnia, but it was the first time playing in our store and hopefully not the last. You may have seen them before at Paddy Flaherty's. The core band is 3 members with the occasional 'friend' added in for fun as was the case here. All four played guitar with the 3 main members doing the singing. Harmonies - oh my gosh what fantastic harmonic voices they have. All their songs have catchy melodies and beats that get your toes tapping. MoreLucky for Cheeky Charlie and us, we were open for business on Sunday, November 25 so Paul & Andrew of REAR VIEW MIRROR could stop in to shop. Rear View Mirror is a Pearl Jam Tribute band that played the night before at The Stubborn Mule. It was really great to meet the guys and chat about their Sarnia show. They both commented on it being a fun show with an enthusastic audience. Also discussed how stores like Cheeky Monkey are few and far between anymore and they seemed to throughly enjoy browsing the bins of CD's and records both new and used. Each of them took home many treasures along with our flyer so they can check us out on line and know what our regular hours are so they can make a point of stopping by again in the future. We look forward to seeing them again next time they play ...
