Under the baton of Conductor and Music Director, Douglas A. Bianchi, the International Symphony Orchestra, the Symphony Singers, and special guests – soprano Sonja Gustafson and bass-baritone Chad Louwerse, will present powerful and poignant works…. reflective of the upcoming Easter Season.
Concerts will take place on Friday, March 23rd, 7:30 p.m., in Hillside Wesleyan Church, Clyde Township, Michigan, and Saturday, March 24th, 7:30 p.m., in Temple Baptist Church, Sarnia, Ontario. Repertoire will include: Beethoven’s Overture to Egmont, a magnificent and wildly popular introduction to the music written in 1809 to accompany Goethe’s play, which depicts the life of the dashing Count of Egmont; Schumann’s short symphony without a slow movement, the delightful Overture, Scherzo and Finale, opus 52; a fresh and evocative new work by Maestro Bianchi, Three Elizabethan Sonnets for voice and orchestra, which will be premièred by the ISO and Ms. Gustafson; and the sublimely beautiful, Requiem, opus 48, by Gabriel Fauré, considered an exquisitely expressive choral masterpiece. Sonja Gustafson and Chad Louwerse will join the International Symphony Singers and orchestra for this much anticipated performance of the Requiem. Ms. Gustafson is one of Canada’s most stunning lyric sopranos. Her warm, focused tone has captured the attention of professionals across the nation. Sonja began her education at the world-renowned Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan and continued her studies at the University of Western Ontario, earning her Masters of Vocal Performance. Sonja’s exceptional talent won her first prize at the prestigious Ontario Arts Foundation Competition and she was also a finalist on the Bravo Series “Bathroom Divas” featuring some of the most celebrated Opera Stars of today. Sonja has performed with the Pacific Opera and Orchestra London in the role of the Countess and the Page in a breathtaking production of Rigoletto, along with countless other opera appearances. She has been featured with orchestras throughout Canada, the United States, and Europe in concert and oratorio performances. In addition to her classical career, Sonja has gained a solid reputation as a jazz vocalist, performing in countless jazz venues and festivals across Southwestern Ontario and well beyond.
Canadian bass-baritone Chad Louwerse was singled out in Chabrier’s l’Étoile by Claude Gingras of La
Presse who wrote, “for pure comedy, first distinction goes to Chad Louwerse”. He made his European debut as Bernadino in Berlioz’ Benvenuto Cellini with l’Opéra National du Rhin in Strasbourg, France.
