September 2nd First Friday turned out to be a hot steamy night filled with surprises. The entertainment for the evening was Sarnia’s own singer-songwriter Mark Blayney. Mark is remembered by many as the key performer at Robbie B’s. Since those days, Mark has put out a CD entitiled ‘Me and My Guitar’ with a second volume due out soon. All his songs come straight from the heart making them feel like he is speaking for you.
Duirng Septemeber’s First Friday, Mark was joined on the Cheeky Monkey Red Carpet Stage by Wulf Von Waldow on saxaphone and Mike Blackmore on d’jembe. This was a pleasant surprise to those of us listening. The added musicians brought a whole new texture to Mark’s songs. We all thought Mike was here to just show his artwork. Each year he organizes a fun event called Mud People in Brights Grove. Everyone is welcome for a day of sun, fun and mud. During this day, Mike takes many photographs he then manipulates into interesting hanging art. His work will be on display and for sale at Cheeky Monkey until September 30th.
Cheeky Charlie was lucky enough to sit in with the band. He forgot his instrument, so he just hummed quietly along – in harmony of course. After the show Mark and Cheeky Charlie spent some quality time doing things like comparing muscles. Even though Cheeky Charlie eats lots of bananas, Mark still won the contest.
Needless to say, a good time was had by all. What could be better on the last long weekend of the summer then some good music and a bit of monkey business?!
