TOM WAITS – BAD AS ME

Throughout his career, Tom Waits has created milestone albums that serve both to refine the music that has come before, and to signal a new phase in his career: Rain Dogs and Mule Variations are both counted by fans as among these pivotal works. Now comes Bad As Me, his first studio album of all new music in seven years, which finds Tom Waits in possibly the finest voice of his career and at the height of his songwriting powers, working with a veteran team of gifted musicians and longtime co-writer/producer Kathleen Brennan. From the opening horn-fueled chug of “Chicago,” to the closing barroom chorale of “New Year’s Eve,” Bad As Me displays the full career  range of Waits’ songwriting, from beautiful ballads like “Last Leaf,” to the avant cinematic soundscape of “Hell Broke Luce,” a battlefront dispatch. On tracks like “Talking at the Same Time,” Waits shows off a supple falsetto, ...

MARKITA IRGLOVA – ANAR

Marketa Irglova, one-half of Oscar-winning duo the Swell Season, says her solo debut Anar is like a time capsule of her first year in New York, where she moved from Ireland in June 2010. Fame came early to Irglova when the film Once became the breakout independent hit of 2007. On that soundtrack album and the subsequent Swell Season release Strict Joy, Irglova won over audiences with her quiet passion and increasing assurance as a musician and songwriter. Now at the ripe age of 23, her decision to branch out on her own was inspired by a combination of a Swell Season hiatus and relocating to New York. "I started writing the songs when I moved," she recalls. "I realized if I wanted to continue making music I just had to create the circumstances for myself. So I just started writing more intensely and in a more committed way than ...

THREAT SIGNAL – THREAT...

There's no doubt that Toronto is one of the more vital and thriving hard music scenes of today, pouring out great bands left and right from all spectrums of rock and metal. THREAT SIGNAL hail from just outside Toronto in the grey, industrialized east end of Hamilton, Ontario, which suits their brand of visceral but very memorable metal. The band's success comes from pure determination, a keen sense of songwriting, and a persistent desire to advance and achieve. Their brand of technical, grooving metal encompasses the vitality of today's metalcore scene and combines that energy with a bottom-heavy, melodic European thrash appeal that transcends genres. Complex yet catchy songwriting is their trademark, and killer hooks and melodies ride side-by-side with punctual rhythms and blazing guitar work, giving Threat Signal a distinct sound and an impressive edge.

BOOKER T. JONES – THE...

The Road from Memphis starts with a young Booker T. Jones hauling his stack of newspapers to Phineas Newborn’s front yard where, while folding them for his after-school delivery route, he could listen to the jazz great practice piano. It ends with Booker and The Roots roaring through a set of both timeless and contemporary originals (and propulsive covers of Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” and Lauren Hill’s “Everything Is Everything”). Along for the ride are vocalists Matt Berninger of the National, Yim Yames of My Morning Jacket, Sharon Jones, Lou Reed, and Booker himself, telling the story of how the funk/soul sound that Booker helped invent spiraled out from Memphis, touching The Root’s hometown of Philadelphia, New York (where engineer Gabe Roth has been recreating classic soul sonics for everyone from Sharon Jones to Amy Winehouse), and Detroit. Detroit as in Dennis Coffey, legendary Motown session guitarist who introduced driving rock-funk ...
