When the W Hotel opened in Hollywood in 2010, Brenna Whitaker and The Little Big Band quickly became the band‐inresidence, with Whitaker defying all Hollywood‐nightlife convention by creating, producing, and directing an incendiary show with a timeless feel that was jam‐packed every Sunday night. BILLY GIBBONS – PERFECTAMUNDO

BILLY GIBBONS –...

Concord Records is releasing Perfectamundo on November 6, 2015. It’s the debut solo album from Billy Gibbons, ZZ Top guitarist/vocalist and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, who is backed by a handpicked group of musicians dubbed The BFG’s on this unique outing. As the title may suggest, the album takes on a bit of an Afro‐Cuban flavor that may come as a surprise to some Gibbons fans and followers. Even before the blues‐rock/hard‐rock great’s first recordings back in 1967 with the Moving Sidewalks, his legendary pre‐ZZ Top Houston psychepunk garage band, Gibbons studied Latin percussion in Manhattan with none other than its preeminent virtuoso, “Mambo King” Tito Puente, a friend of Billy’s bandleader dad. Puente taught the young Gibbons the essential Latin rhythms via conga, bongo, maracas and, most importantly, timbales. “Banging away on ‘em came back like riding on a lost bicycle,” Gibbons relates of his return to the genre by way of ...

NATALIE MERCHANT –...

Nonesuch Records releases Natalie Merchant's Paradise Is There: The New Tigerlily Recordings on November 6, 2015. This collection of all-new recordings revisits Merchant's multi-platinum solo debut, Tigerlily, originally released in 1995 following her departure from 10,000 Maniacs. The new release is accompanied by a documentary DVD. The memoir-style film contains live performances, archival footage, and interviews with musicians, friends, and fans about the influence the songs of Tigerlily have had over the past 20 years. Tigerlily was described by the New York Times in 1995 as "an anomaly in a music scene in which reckless female performers reign supreme." The album sold more than five million copies worldwide and featured the popular hit singles "Carnival," "Wonder," and "Jealousy." Paradise Is There presents the songs as they have evolved over the past two decades of live performance. Joining Merchant on the album, which she produced herself, are her longtime band members Gabriel Gordon (guitar), Jesse Murphy (bass), Uri Sharlin (piano & accordion), and Allison Miller (drums), as well ...

Trivia Q & A # 43 –...

Q.  What 15 year old Rock-Icon-to-be was grounded for the whole summer after sneaking out to her first concert to see David Bowie? A.  Madonna Madonna Louise Ciccone  (born August 16, 1958) to Catholic parents Silvio Anthony "Tony" Ciccone and Madonna Louise Fortin (c. 1933 – December 1, 1963) in Bay City, Michigan, on August 16, 1958. Her father's parents were immigrants from Pacentro, Italy, while her mother was of French-Canadian ancestry. Tony worked as an engineer designer for Chrysler and General Motors. Since Madonna had the same name as her mother, family members called her "Little Nonni". She was raised in the Detroit suburbs of Pontiac and Avon Township (nowRochester Hills). Months before her mother died from breast cancer, Madonna noticed changes in her behavior and personality, although she did not understand the reason. Her mother was at a loss to explain her medical condition, and often began to cry when Madonna questioned her about it. ...

RYAN ADAMS – 1989

RYAN ADAMS – 1989

"What you can’t question about this 1989 is the effort and care that Adams put into conceiving these covers... this is not 1989 unplugged. It is 1989 reimagined, with often startling results… you’ll stop wondering why Ryan Adams felt the need to redo 1989. You’ll just be glad he did.”— AMERICAN SONGWRITER "Ryan Adams transforms Taylor Swift’s 1989 into a melancholy masterpiece... decidedly free of irony or shtick, and, perhaps more important for a covers album, transforms the source material... In a sense, Adams has created the soundtrack to a fictional ’80s teen movie.”—AV CLUB “There’s nothing ironic or tossed off about Adams’ interpretations. By stripping all 13 tracks of their pony‐stomp synths and high‐gloss studio sheen, he reveals the bones of what are essentially timeless, genre‐less songs… If turning the biggest, shiniest pop record of the past year into a survey course in classic rock economy sounds like a novelty, it is. But it’s also the ...

IAN FLETCHER THORNLEY – SECRETS

IAN FLETCHER THORNLEY –...

Ian Thornley is best known as the lead singer and guitarist for multiplatinum selling hard rock outfits Big Wreck and Thornley, but let’s put that aside for the time being. On his first solo album, Secrets, made as Ian Fletcher Thornley, he gets closer to the core of his musical identity than he ever has before. With 13 tracks that add up to a bold reflection of his artistic maturity, the album is slated for release on October 30, 2015 through Anthem Records/Warner Music Canada. Accompanied only by a rhythm section comprised of Blue Rodeo drummer Glenn Milchem and Big Wreck bassist Dave McMillan, Thornley’s vision for this highly personal project was brought to fruition with the aid of producer Mark Howard, a Hamilton, Ontario native who, along with being Daniel Lanois’ longtime right-hand man on albums with Bob Dylan, Neil Young and U2, also helmed acclaimed albums for artists including The Tragically Hip, Lucinda Williams and the late Chris Whitley. Relying on Howard’s “audio vérité” ...
